Guessing that the badge was victim of an attempted theft which resulted in the break. I don’t think the owner tried to modify it.

I can’t see how what’s there is part of the ‘5' that came with the car ... but that’s probably not the worst thing wrong with it. Should have peeked inside to see the condition.
